A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.
In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable—they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.
When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.
My Review:
Elizabeth Richards is a genius. Where she came up with the concept behind "Black City" is beyond me. This world she created was addicting and alluring. Though at times, I was a tad bit confused about the whole wall separating Darklings and humans. I wasn't lost enough to not enjoy the story. In fact, Ms. Richards pretty much explains everything in the beginning of the book, so pay close attention so you won't miss it as I did. I guess I was just so excited that I somehow skipped it without realizing it.
Richards created a world where everyone is afraid of Darklings (vampire creatures). And there's a war between humans and Darklings. Darklings are looking for justice and humans are looking for safety. But the best part of the book for me is...A forbidden love. And like most of us know, we all love the forbidden. A human girls falls in love with a Darkling! Who doesn't want to fall in love with a sexy/ bad boy? Yeah, I do! Maybe not. LOL. Well Richards give you, your fix of sexy bad boy, your strong heroine, your war and most familiar of all a corrupt government.
Damaris has been trying to get me to pick up Black City for the longest. I got it at BEA and I haven't opened it until recently. But when I did open it, I absorbed the story. Ash and Natalie became my best friends for the time being. If you love the paranormal genre, then this is a must for you. Black City gets a 5 stars from me, a definite must buy and a Good Choice for Reading!
